Inscribed on the back of the image is “Peninsula Center.” Construction on the 30,000 square foot Safeway market began in January 1960 and was completed in September of the same year. Safeway was part of a larger town center development project called Peninsula Shopping Center developed by Jerry Moss and Palos Verdes Properties on a 30 acre site bounded by Indian Peak Road, Crossfield Drive, Silver Spur Road and Hawthorne Boulevard. Peninsula Shopping Center celebrated its grand opening in May 1961. In addition to Safeway, the Center included J.J. Newberry’s, Thrifty Drug Store, Sally Shops, Rea’s Hardware, Pacific State Bank, Children’s Shoeland, White’s Bakery, 31 Flavors Ice Cream and Shell and Chevron gas stations among other merchants. The architectural firm of Gruen & Associates were commissioned to design the project with a mix of modern and Spanish architecture.
